WE ALL DIE TRYING TO GET IT RIGHT by Michael Ryan Webb
There are exactly two things that Rafael Torres has always wanted out of life. The first is to see the Golden Gate Bridge in person and experience the sight that inspired his late mother to become a brilliant architect. The second is for his best friend, Henry Wyatt, to finally reciprocate the love that Rafael has held for him for over a decade. For a moment, it seems as if Rafael might get everything he’s hoped for when Henry joins him on a trip to finally visit the Golden Gate Bridge. But all is not as it seems, and Rafael will be forced to confront his complicated history with Henry while learning that in the end, life is never exactly as we want it to be, and we all die trying to get it right.
Warning: This review probably won’t make an ounce of sense because it will basically just contain me gushing.
I read Ryan’s first book, HOW WE LOVE, last year and I absolutely loved it. I always get scared to read a book from someone that I really care about, because how awkward would it be if I didn’t like it?
I’m very glad to say that this is one of my favorite books of the year, and is now one of my favorite books of all time.
One thing that really surprised me about this book was that even though it’s filled with flashbacks, I still enjoyed it. I’m someone who typically loathes flashbacks, but I was sucked in right from the first one and I think that they really make the story richer.
His writing is what I loved most about this book. It flowed so well and it really brought the two main characters together and even though this book is a short 300 pages, I found myself never wanting to leave these characters.
Also, this rep is just so good. We have a latino main character (which is own voices), who is obviously gay (own voices as well), who is an amputee and a cancer patient in remission, which just isn’t something that you see often.
And that ending. What. the. fuck. That’s all I’m going to say because, SPOILERS, but you’ll know what I’m talking about when you read it. WHICH!!! YOU!!! SHOULD!!! DO!!!
