Rapid Reviews | #1

First off, thank you to my friend Karen for coming up with the title of this series!

I don’t always have enough thoughts to write an entire review on the book, so I thought that I would do a mashup review of a few books I’ve read recently!

THE PRINCE AND THE DRESSMAKER by Jen Wang

Sent to me by: First Second Books

★ ★ ★ ★ .5 / 5

I was sent this unsolicited and I’m not a huge fan of fairy tale type or stories, so i honestly wasn’t going to read this until I saw RecItRachel raving about it, so I decided to pick it up.

This graphic novel was SO CUTE. It follows a prince (who likes drag!!) who falls in love with his dressmaker..how could you not love it?

I thought the art style was absolutely beautiful, and I really, really loved the representation, so I would highly recommend that you pick this graphic novel up.

THE ROANOKE GIRLS by Amy Engel

Sent to me by: Penguin Random House

 ★ / 5

This has SUCH an interesting concept and I’ve heard countless times that this book was super messed up (which it was), so I was really excited to read it because that’s totally my thing, but I was ultimately disappointed by this book, and I think that a lot of it has to do with the marketing.

This book has been marketed as a thriller, when in reality, it wasn’t thrilling in the slightest bit. I went through half of the book and NOTHING was happening. I think that if I went in expecting a domestic drama or something similar, I would have given this a higher rating, but I can’t recommend this one if you’re looking for a thriller.

THE CLIMB by Damien Benoit – Ledoux

Sent to me by: The Author

★ ★ ★ ★ / 5

I think that Damien is telling a very important story with this one. A big portion of queer teens are from religious households and I think that this book could be very helpful to them if they were going through a similar situation as Skyler.

I thought that the characters were very well fleshed out and I ended up caring about each and every one of them.

I will say though, I found this book to be a bit long – winded at 360 pages. If the book were to be cut down just fifty pages, this would have been a five star read for me.

That’s it for right now! I realize that all three of these are books that were sent to me for review, but in the future I will have a variety of books sent to me for review, as well as books I purchased myself / got from the library.

Thank you so much to the publishers and author who sent me their book!

xx Dylan
